Services for Members

SOPEC brings value to member communities and the energy choice market in Ohio by using community choice aggregation to secure competitive supply prices that allow the organization to create supplemental services and impactful electric utility programming, leveraging state, federal, and private capital.

Most of our member communities are served by investor-owned electric distribution utilities (EDUs). EDUs maintain the electric lines and provides customer support for all matters pertaining to electricity delivery. Municipal electric utilities and rural electric cooperatives are unaffected by aggregation.

If individual customers, residential or small commercial class, do not select a supply product on their own (see offers here), EDUs will provide the standard service offer (SSO) — effectively purchasing electricity for them. SOPEC steps in to fill this purchasing role, collecting administration fees that would normally go to EDUs for providing the SSO. SOPEC dollars are instead used and leveraged to support our communities’ sustainable energy goals.

Program Access

Each member community that joins the SOPEC Council of Governments receives open access to all SOPEC programming and services for energy customers in their community. Becoming a member community of SOPEC is easy and there is no fee or cost for communities to join.
