Athens, Ohio — In partnership with the Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC), the Village of Albany, the Village of Amesville, the City of Athens, Athens County, the City of Belpre, the Village of Buchtel, the Village of Chauncey, the Village of Chesterhill, the City of Cleveland, the City of Gahanna, the City of Gallipolis, the Village of Hemlock, the Village of Jacksonville, the City of Logan, the Village of Lowell, the Village of Marble Cliff, the Village of New Concord, the Village of New Straitsville, the Village of Norwich, the Village of Piketon, the Village of Racine, the Village of Rio Grande, the City of Riverside, the Village of Shawnee, the Village of Somerset, the Village of Trimble, Unity Township and the City of Upper Arlington have been recognized for their use of Green-e ® Energy certified renewable energy.

Collectively, over 779,000 Green-e ® certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) sourced from eligible wind projects were retired on behalf of these communities and SOPEC for the Green-e ® reporting year 2024. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, RECs are issued when one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy resource. These RECs originate from eligible wind energy resources, as defined by the Center for Resource Solutions’ Green-e ® Energy National Standards, and meet all applicable product specifications and vintages.

As member communities of SOPEC, these communities join dozens of Ohio communities and political subdivisions working together to build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

SOPEC functions as a shared energy office, dedicated to delivering innovative and sustainable energy solutions across the state.
